                         THE UNITED NATIONS




                   The  United  Nations  was  created  following  the
            Second World War, on 24 October 1945. Its aim was to

            help  the  countries  discuss  and  solve  their  issues  in  an

            institution recognized by the whole world.

                   Today it has 193 member states. It grew out of the
            League of Nations, formed in 1919 with the same aim. Its

            members are all the independent states, except Western

            Sahara,    Taiwan  and  Palestine  which  are  de  facto
            independent  or  partly  recognized  states.  Vatican  and

            Switzerland  have  the  status  of  non-member  observer

            states.  Its  name  was  given  by  Franklin  Roosevelt  during

            the  Second  World  War  as  an  association  of  the  Allied
